Bridge Buildings 2024 and the scaffolding goes up. With spring on the horizon, it’s time to spruce up one of the Bridge Trust’s most prized buildings.
Bridge Buildings is a Grade 11 Listed Building commissioned by the Feoffees of Barnstaple Bridge (the forerunners of the Trustees of the Bridge Trust) to beautify the approach to the town. The distinguished architect, RD Gould, was a proud Barumite who also designed Bridge Chambers, on the other side of the Strand. The construction took place in two distinct phases, the first starting in 1844, the second completed in 1877.
Bridge Buildings gets a comprehensive make over roughly every five years. The scaffolding is going up to allow closer inspection in order to establish exactly what needs to be done. Then the work can commence, and it is expected that the building will be displaying its makeover, scaffolding-free, by mid-April.
